Microsoft Explains Why Folding Phones Is The Next Big Thing

We have already seen a folding phone reach the market, with the ZTE Axon M, and following the rumors we can expect some more next year, including market leaders such as Samsung and potentially the Microsoft Surface team.

Now in a patent application, Microsoft explained why the right time is for a double screen folding phone, which says:

  •     Along with these enhanced capabilities has arisen the demand for larger screens to provide a richer user experience. The screens of mobile phones have increased in size to the point where they can now consume almost the entire display area of a telephone. To increase the size of the screens more, it would require an increase in the size of the phones. This is not desirable, since users want their mobile phone to fit comfortably in the hand or in the pocket of a shirt or pants.

  •     As a result, dual-screen devices are becoming more popular. With a dual-screen device, the mobile phone or tablet can include an open and expanded position in which both screens are aligned so that the user feels that there is a single integrated screen. In a closed and condensed position, both screens are face to face to protect the screens. In a fully open position, the dual screens can be placed one behind the other so that the user has to flip the device to see the opposite screen.

In short, screens have become the largest they can get, while phones can still be stored in your pocket, and the only way to access a larger screen is to start folding them.

Seen in the context of this broader trend, the idea that folding screens are the natural progression of smartphones makes sense, and suggests that there may be a real push to develop these devices and greater acceptance and demand from consumers for These big screen phones than expected.
